Milwaukee Bucks ‘have to pull the trigger’ on Brook Lopez trade amid stunning contract dilemma

Paolo Songco

Milwaukee Bucks huge man Brook Lopez is no spring chicken. The 7-foot-1 center will be 37 next season, which, incidentally, will also be the final year of his current contract with the team.

This contract will be worth $23 million, which will have a significant impact on Milwaukee’s reserve during the 2024-25 season. At this point in his career, it’s not surprising that questions have been raised about whether Lopez is still worth his weight in gold and whether the Bucks should cash in on the former All-Star now while they still can.

Devon Platana of Dairyland Express strongly believes that the Bucks should “bite the bullet” on Lopez. This means the two-time All-Defense center has now become more valuable as a trade asset for Milwaukee rather than a key member of the lineup.

There’s no denying that Lopez still brings a lot to the team, especially defensively. However, it is challenging to deny the view that it is in a phase of decline. Platana has numbers to prove this thesis:

“Clearly Lopez he is not an elite defender that he once was. Not only was his 2.8 defensive win percentage the third-worst in the past six seasons, but the 114 points per 100 possessions the Bucks allowed while he was on the court was a new career-worst,” Platana wrote.

Moreover, Lopez’s expiring contract could be a key element of a potential blockbuster trade deal. This could be something the Bucks could consider if they plan to hit the trade market this summer.

Considering all this, Platana argues that it’s time for the Bucks to say goodbye to their beloved huge man:

“Given how Lopez’s mobility is also compromised at this stage of his career, it may be time to bite the bullet and say goodbye. He has provided Bucks fans with great memories over the last six seasons, but if moving him means improving the team’s title chances, GM Horst he has to pull the trigger”- wrote Platana.
