Over the years, Bobby Portis has established himself as a beloved member of the Milwaukee Bucks, especially among fans. However, this offseason is a significant one for the veteran winger, as he is eligible for a contract extension.
Before joining the league, Portis enjoyed a successful collegiate career at the University of Arkansas, earning SEC Player of the Year honors in 2015 and being a unanimous second-team All-American. He was later drafted in the first round Project 2015 by the Chicago Bulls with the 22nd pick in the draft.
While with the Bulls, Portis put together some great performances, including a career-high 27 points and 12 rebounds against the Boston Celtics in 2017. However, he also had off-court issues, including a suspension for an altercation with a teammate.
After playing for Chicago, he played for the Washington Wizards and New York Knicks before joining two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks in 2020. In Milwaukee, Portis continued to be a productive player, helping the team win the NBA championship in 2021. He has established himself as a valuable offensive player in the NBA, known for his rebounding and scoring abilities.
Bobby Portis eligible for gigantic contract extension from Milwaukee Bucks this offseason
As it stands, Portis has two years left on his contract with the option to opt out of the final season. According to an article by Jim Owczarski for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the veteran Bucks forward has the right to extend his contract with his current team.
“Portis could be offered a max contract worth $78.9 million over the next four years by the Bucks. The Journal Sentinel has learned that while Portis is interested in an extension, the organization has not taken any action on the matter.” Owczarski wrote.
The Last SeasonPortis, in his fourth year with Milwaukee, averaged 13.8 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists. He also shot 50 percent from the field, 40 percent from beyond the arc and 79 percent from the free throw line. It remains to be seen whether the Bucks can afford to extend his contract, given how loaded the roster already is.
If Portis doesn’t get an extension from the Bucks, expect him to be included in trade talks in the coming months. Surely every team in the league would love to have a player with his skill set.
