The departure of Jrue Holiday and the acquisition of Damian Lillard have left the Milwaukee Bucks weaker defensively, and the front office could rectify that by making a move to acquire Cody Martin to improve the team’s performance on that end of the court.
Bucks try to regain their status as an elite defensive team entering the 2024-25 NBA season. Historically, the team has excelled defensively under former coach Mike Budenholzer, but last season it took a significant dip, finishing 19th in defensive rating. A midseason change by coach Doc Rivers brought some improvement, but the team struggled, especially in transition defense.
Key players Giannis Antetokounmpo and Brook Lopez remain key to the Bucks’ defensive strategy. Lopez, at 36 years elderly, has proven to be an effective rim protector, ranking high on blocks and contested shots. Antetokounmpo remains a threat, contributing significantly to rim protection and overall defensive efforts.
However, the Bucks have faced challenges with the loss of elite perimeter defenders like Holiday. To bolster their defense, the Bucks may need to integrate a defensive player into the starting lineup that will allow them to utilize their offensive talent while providing a robust defensive presence.
Milwaukee Bucks acquire Cody Martin to improve defense for 2024-25 season
While the Bucks won’t have the resources to acquire elite defensive talent, they can still make things work. The front office could consider acquiring Martin, as explained in NBA Analysis by Dan Favale of Bleacher Report.
Milwaukee Bucks receive: Cody Martin
Charlotte Hornets receive: Pat Connaughton, 2031 second-round draft pick
Various knee and ankle injuries have constrained him to just 35 games over the past two seasons. But when hearty, he’s a vulnerable defender. Charlotte routinely fielded him against the 1, 2, 3 and even 4. At his peak in 2021-22, Martin also showed the ability to knock down spot-up 3s and torch defenses as a playmaker and third-string playmaker.
Milwaukee shouldn’t think twice about this — injury concerns and all. Martin’s salary through 2025-26 is not guaranteed, so in a worst-case scenario, this could significantly reduce next year’s tax bill.
In his five-year period Martin averaged 6.0 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists while playing for the Charlotte Hornets. While his long-range shooting could apply some work, the concrete attributes he could potentially bring to the defense will be significant for the Bucks.
With the right adjustments, including the potential acquisition of Martin, the Bucks could return to the NBA’s top-tier defense. Ultimately, achieving a top-10 defensive rating will be key to Milwaukee’s championship aspirations next season.
