The Milwaukee Bucks made a shocking selection by selecting the 23rd player in the 2024 NBA Draft, selecting a point guard AJ Johnson. Johnson is only 19 years elderly and there were multiple mock drafts that resulted in him being selected in the second round of the 2024 NBA draft and not being selected in the first round.
It was a surprising pick by Milwaukee Bucks general manager Jon Horst. AJ Johnson was a four-star recruit coming out of high school but decided not to play college basketball last season. Johnson played in the Australian NBL’s Next Star program last season. In that league, he averaged just 2.9 points per game and averaged just 7.7 minutes per game with the Illawarra Hawks.
AJ Johnson is 6’4″. It will be fascinating to see if he makes it into the Bucks rotation next season or not. This may have been one of the most surprising first-round picks in the 2024 NBA Draft on Wednesday night.
NBA analyst named Milwaukee Bucks AJ Johnson as the winner on Wednesday night’s 2024 NBA Draft
Dan Devine of Yahoo Sports he listed some winners and losers Wednesday night during the 2024 NBA Draft. One of the winners on his list was Johnson. Despite not being a projected first-round pick, Devine said of him:
“You don’t get invited to the green room, you show up anyway and you can shock the world by landing in the first round, celebrating with your family in the stands at the Barclays Center and then going to the stage to prepare the commission? I have to imagine it doesn’t get any better than that.”
Johnson could be the winner if he takes the NBA draft on Wednesday night in the stands, and he’ll be lucky if his name is called while watching the first round of the draft from the stands. He’ll have a lot of work to do with the Milwaukee Bucks.
There were so many players the Bucks could have taken instead. What didn’t facilitate Milwaukee’s draft plans was the fact that center Kel’el Ware of the Indiana Hoosiers was selected 15th overall by the Miami Heat. In addition, the Denver Nuggets traded with the Phoenix Suns and jumped Milwaukee by the 22nd pick to select center Daron Holmes II from the Dayton Flyers.
Milwaukee could have taken center Kyle Filipowski from Duke with the 23rd pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, but selecting AJ Johnson will have Bucks fans scratching their heads all summer long.
