Milwaukee Bucks star Damian Lillard defends Kevin Durant amid trade rumors

This Milwaukee Bucks is no stranger to being the center of trade rumors. Even after winning the 2021 NBA title, there were rumors that two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo might request a trade. It seems like every year since 2018 there have been trade rumors about the Greek Freak.

There have been numerous trade rumors this offseason regarding Bucks players: Brook Lopez, Bobby Portis, Pat Connaughton, and even Damian Lillard. Of these four players, the only one who is untouchable on the offseason trade market is Lillard. The remaining three were made available by the Bucks front office in a trade that could make the roster younger and more athletic, especially on defense.

The Bucks, of course, acquired Lillard slow last offseason in a trade that sent Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trailblazers and Grayson Allen to the Phoenix Suns. However, prior to that trade, Lillard had been the subject of constant rumors for months.

Before Milwaukee stepped in and completed the deal in secret, Lillard was set to be traded to the Miami Heat, a team he said was his preferred destination. However, Miami refused to meet the Trailblazers’ asking price and talks stalled.

The constant chatter surrounding Lillard wasn’t simple for him to handle, especially since he was going through an unfortunate transitional phase of separating from his wife and initiating divorce proceedings.

On the first night of the 2024 NBA Draft, it became known that the Houston Rockets were interested in trading Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant. Although no trade occurred, trade rumors surrounding Durant have persisted since that night.

Part of the chat included jokes about Durant, who has not played more than three seasons with one team since leaving the Oklahoma City Thunder. In response to one of those jokes, Durant posted the following on X (formerly Twitter):

Lillard posted a screenshot of Durant’s post on his Instagram the following message: :

“We live in a sports world where fans/media demean some of the greatest… still smh.”

Lillard is right. Social media has given fans access to players they didn’t have before. The anonymity of a computer screen or phone makes them more daring than they otherwise would be.

It is not yet known whether the Suns (who are currently coached by former Bucks head coach Mike Budenholzer) will trade Durant.

With that in mind, there will certainly be plenty of rumors throughout the offseason.
