Milwaukee Bucks: Where does Damian Lillard rank among the best point guards in the NBA?

Even if all the talented players currently play point guard in the NBA, only a few can be considered the best of the best. In this regard, Damian Lillard of the Milwaukee Bucks is among those who are ahead of the 2024-25 season.

Lillard’s NBA legacy is already significant after 12 seasonsbut questions remain about how he will be remembered, especially without a championship ring. Known for his incredible plays in key moments, including iconic buzzer-beaters, Lillard left his mark on the court with his scoring ability and leadership.

Drafted sixth overall by the Portland Trail Blazers in 2012, Lillard quickly established himself, earning Rookie of the Year honors. His early impact helped revitalize a team that had struggled in the playoffs for more than a decade. He consistently showed his scoring ability throughout his career, reaching a career-high 71 points per game, and often led his team to the postseason despite constrained support.

Lillard’s partnership with LaMarcus Aldridge was key early on, but after Aldridge left, he faced the challenge of running the team largely on his own. Although he made multiple All-Star teams and earned All-NBA honors, he was often overshadowed by contemporaries like Stephen Curry and Russell Westbrook.

While the league has seen an enhance in the number of talented point guards, Lillard still holds the distinction of being one of the best players at the position. According to Frank Urbina from Hoops HypeThe Bucks star is currently the eighth-best player in the league.

“2022-23 has been a year of change for Damian Lillard, who has had to adjust not only to playing for a team other than the Portland Trail Blazers for the first time in his career, but also to a Milwaukee Bucks team where he wasn’t the team’s best player. Lillard hasn’t been the team’s second-best player since early in his career, when he was the Robin to LaMarcus Aldridge’s Batman, and even then, Aldridge wasn’t as dominant with the ball — or as good — as former MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo.

As a result, Lillard has had some trouble posting to some extent. third worst “VORP and BPM of his career, while averaging 24.3 points and 7.0 assists on 42.4 percent shooting from the field. It’s a testament to how brilliant Lillard has been throughout his career that these numbers are seen as a decline in his game. What was troubling was that Lillard’s three-point shooting percentage dropped to 35.4 percent from the field last season, also the third-worst of his career,” Urbina wrote.

In 2023, Lillard was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks, giving him a fresh start and a chance to compete for a title alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo. However, injuries have hindered their playoff run in 2024. Even so, the All-Star point guard has still put up big numbers in the regular season and playoffs.

Ultimately, Lillard’s legacy is defined by his dedication to the game and his resilience. Even without a championship, his impact on the court and his unforgettable moments will ensure he is remembered as one of the game’s greatest players, and his number hangs high in Portland as a testament to his contributions.
