Milwaukee Bucks: Why Doc Rivers Would Like to Recreate His Playing Career

Even with all the success and controversy he’s experienced, head coach Doc Rivers still has some things he’d do if he were an busy player, and during a workout with the Milwaukee Bucks, he relayed that thought to All-Star point guard Damian Lillard and other players on the roster.

Born in Chicago in 1961, Rivers played basketball at Marquette University, where he was a standout player. He was then drafted in the second round of the 1983 NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks, where he played point guard for eight seasons. He was named an NBA All-Star in 1988 and was known for his excellent playmaking skills.

After ending his sports career in 1996.Rivers moved on to a coaching career. He had a successful period as the head coach of the Orlando Magic from 1999 to 2003, being named NBA Coach of the Year in 2000. He then took over as head coach of the Boston Celtics in 2004, leading the team to the NBA championship in 2008. He later coached the Los Angeles Clippers from 2013 to 2020 and the Philadelphia 76ers from 2020 to 2023, before being hired by the Milwaukee Bucks in 2024.

Rivers is widely respected in the NBA and has been named one of the 15 greatest coaches in league history. He has four All-Star appearances as a head coach and is known for his adaptability and affable approach to players. His successful playing and coaching careers have cemented his status as a basketball legend.

Before the season began, Rivers was spotted working out for the Bucks. In a video shared by Formula Zero on InstagramThe Milwaukee coach revealed what he would like to do again if given the chance to play in the league.

Earlier this year, Rivers agreed to become the Bucks’ novel coach following Adrian Griffin’s firing. However, Milwaukee was knocked out of contention when it was eliminated in the first round by Tyrese Haliburton and the Indiana Pacers.

When the NBA returns soon, it remains to be seen whether the Bucks will be able to apply Rivers’ lessons on the court or not. With two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo leading the way, many eyes will be on Milwaukee and their quest to win another ring.
