A woman is dead following a motorcycle crash north of Middleton.
The Dane County Sheriff’s Office said the crash occurred Sunday around 3:40 p.m. near the Missouri Tavern when a motorcycle traveling northbound on Highway 12 crashed near Kickaboo Road in the town of Springfield.
The identity of the 54-year-old driver, who was the only one traveling on a motorcycle, has not yet been revealed. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. It was unclear Monday what led to the crash because the Sheriff’s Office did not mention any other vehicle. The crash closed Highway 12 between Highway 19 and Meffert Rd for about four hours.
The cause of the crash is being investigated by the Sheriff’s Office.
Nine people have died in motorcycle crashes this year, all of them drivers, according to the state Department of Transportation. For comparison, in 2023 there were six motorcycle fatalities during this time. According to the Department of Transportation, a total of more than 100 people died in motorcycle crashes in 2023.
