Authorities said a motorcycle rider was killed Sunday morning when he hit a tree that fell onto a road in Vernon County.
Around 2 a.m. Sunday, authorities were notified of a motorcycle crash on Holt Road, between Lawrence Ridge Road and Mellem Road in the town of Wheatland, Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson said in a statement.
Investigators determined that the driver, 71-year-old Gary Fred Moore of rural De Soto, was traveling south when he struck a tree that had fallen onto the road, likely as a result of a storm that passed through the area, Torgerson said.
Moore, who was riding alone on the motorcycle and was not wearing a helmet, suffered grave injuries and died at the scene despite resuscitation efforts by paramedics, Torgerson said.
The incident remains under investigation by the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office and the Vernon County Coroner’s Office, Torgerson said.
