The Wisconsin Badgers completed a return to a solid commitment to Miami (OH)’s 2025 high school recruiting class.
Cairo Skanes, a 2025 defenseman, was previously committed to Miami before announcing a change in his commitment to the Badgers. Skanes is an unranked recruit but has offers from a number of high-profile schools, including the Michigan State Spartans, who also recently hosted a recruit. Wisconsin State has been instrumental in recruiting Skanes over the past few months, and that recruitment has ultimately paid off.
Skanes visited Wisconsin Badgers for the game and did the same with the Badgers, which put the recruit on the commitment reversal radar in tardy October. The cornerback joins the Badgers’ 2025 recruiting class just minutes after the program lost its sophomore guard to the transfer portal.
Jonas Duclona joined Amare Snowden in the portal after a tough 2024 season on and off the field in Madison. Duclona has yet to actually comment on his decision, but Snowden has been extremely vocal in stating that position coach Paul Haynes had an influence on his decision. Snowden also added that he would remain a member of the program if Haynes did not become a head coach, but that will not be the case with the Wisconsin Badgers.
Haynes clearly has great relationships with most of the youngsters in the corner room, having signed Xavier Lucas, Omillio Agard and Jay Harper, among others. Skanes will join the players brought into the program by Haynes and could become a solid part of the defense’s development.
The Wisconsin Badgers have placed an emphasis on development over the last two years and have signed players in each of the last two classes with restricted exposure but high upside.
The Wisconsin Badgers are adding recruits and subtracting players from the program
The North Carolina native is a high, lean linebacker who still needs to build his frame for college football, standing at 6-foot-4 and 155 pounds. Skanes was previously a highly sought-after FCS prospect and had plenty of offers from smaller schools, but Duke, North Carolina and Charlotte provided top offers for the cornerback.
Skanes is a quick, lively player who can get off the line quickly, which allows him to get into the marking zone where he really excels. Despite his size, Skanes is a physical defender who isn’t afraid to apply every yard allowed for melee and pushing before the route really develops.
The cornerback has dealt with both being in an area with restricted exposure and being a slightly undersized player.
With the right training and the right cornerback defense expertise, the Wisconsin Badgers could certainly turn Skanes into a capable offensive lineman.
