The Green Bay Packers have a modern player on the injured list: cornerback Carrington Valentine. The sophomore cornerback will miss Wednesday’s practice with a modern hamstring injury, by Ryan Wood of PackersNews.com.
The severity of the injury is unknown at this time, but his absence from the practice field could halt the early momentum Valentine has built during training camp. Coach Matt LaFleur said Valentine has done a “great job” to start camp.
“CV, he’s still playing. He had another big pick last practice. I just love how he competes,” LaFleur said Tuesday.
Valentine is battling 2021 first-round pick Erik Stokes — another early training camp standout — for the starting cornerback spot opposite Jaire Alexander. Even if he loses the competition, Valentine figures to be a massive part of the Packers’ defense in 2024, especially given the recent injury histories of both Stokes and Alexander.
Though he was petite as a rookie, Valentine gained weight and strength during the offseason.
Valentine was remarkably robust as a rookie, playing in all 17 regular-season games and both playoff games. He was listed on the injured list only once: questionable in Week 4 because of a biceps injury he suffered the week before.
The Packers bolstered their linebacker position ahead of Tuesday’s practice, signing rookies Don Callis and LJ Smith.
Rookie offensive lineman Donovan Jennings also will not practice Wednesday with a knee injury. He started camp on the PUP list with a knee injury.
