Packers DE Arron Mosby won’t travel to Brazil except for Eagles game

The Green Bay Packers will be without backup defensive quarterback Aaron Mosby for Friday’s season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. Mosby, who was named to the 53-man roster after a successful summer, will not travel with the team to Brazil on Wednesday due to a personal matter and will not play in Week 1.

Mosby made a pass breakup, strip sack and interception in the preseason, earning himself a roster spot. He transitioned from off-ball linebacker to 4-3 defensive end in Jeff Hafley’s modern scheme and was impressive all summer.

As the fifth or possibly sixth defensive quarterback on the roster, Mosby had a chance of missing Week 1. But the Packers see him as a potential key player for Rich Bisaccia’s special teams.

There is a chance that Brenton Cox Jr. will get a chance to play as the fifth defensive quarterback, but against the Eagles, the Packers will likely give most of their playmaking to Rashan Gary, Preston Smith, Lukas Van Ness and Kingsley Enagbare, so Cox could find himself among the inactives if he does not have a robust role on special teams.

The Packers will not practice during their 10-hour-plus flight to Brazil on Wednesday, but the team estimated six players will participate in confined capacity on its updated injury report: receiver Romeo Doubs (hand), linebacker Edgerrin Cooper (hip), cornerback Carrington Valentine (hamstring), tight end Tucker Kraft (back), running back MarShawn Lloyd (hamstring) and running back Emanuel Wilson (hip). The final injury report with game status designations is due Thursday.
