Packers’ division will allow rookie Jordan Morgan to focus on right guard

The Green Bay Packers want first-round pick Jordan Morgan to focus on one position early in his NFL career, so when Adam Stenavich and the rest of the offensive staff were looking at possible paths to a starting role in 2024, they settled on right guard as Morgan’s best chance to be a top-five offensive line starter.

Stenavich said Monday that the Packers will let Morgan — the team’s first-round pick in the 2024 draft — settle in to compete for the right guard position and then move on.

“I think with young guys, you want to put them in one spot. You don’t want to move them around so much so they can focus on techniques and assignments and all that,” Stenavich said. “And when you look at the bigger picture, where we think he would compete best this year for a starting role, we looked at it and we thought right guard was the best spot. That’s what we’re going to focus on for now. Once he understands that and gets better, we can move him if we want, or he does a great job there and we’ll be ready. Right now, we’re going to focus on keeping him in one spot so he can focus on that and be the best he can be.”

Most of Morgan’s training camp players played inside guard. Morgan, a left-sided college quarterback at Arizona State, is still adjusting to life as an inside guard at the NFL level.

“He did well. He showed some really good stuff,” Stenavich said. “There’s a lot of technical stuff he has to learn, just like any young offensive lineman, and especially when you go from quarterback to linebacker, there’s a learning curve there that you just have to go through.”

Morgan’s biggest competition at right guard will be Sean Rhyan, a third-round pick in the 2022 draft who rotated with Jon Runyan Jr. for much of last season. Runyan signed with the New York Giants as a free agent.

Stenavich believes the depth and talent on the Packers defensive line — especially inside — will provide Morgan with “good competition in practice,” potentially helping his development.

“I think he’s done a really good job so far, just learning and going through the growing pains and stuff like that,” Stenavich said. “But I see a lot of really good flashes from him and I think he’s got a bright future.”

Stenavich said that aside from considering Morgan at offensive point guard, Andre Dillard, Kadeem Telfort, Caleb Jones, Luke Tenuta and rookie Travis Glover are all competing for the point guard role behind Rasheed Walker and Zach Tom.
