Packers release offensive lineman Royce Newman after final cuts

The Green Bay Packers are releasing offensive lineman Royce Newman as part of final roster cuts Tuesday, according to Matt Schneidman of The Athletic.

Newman, 27, was selected by the Packers in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He played in 51 games and had 24 starts for Green Bay over his first three NFL seasons.

Despite a contract restructuring that was supposed to make keeping him in 2024 more feasible, Newman failed to earn a spot on the roster this summer.

Newman, who started 16 games and played more than 1,000 snaps as a rookie, never really took off. Last season, Newman started just two games and saw just 183 snaps as a reserve linebacker. He was rated poorly by Pro Football Focus as both a run blocker and a pass rusher.

Newman played 146 snaps for the Packers this preseason, allowing two pressures and committing one fumble, and again struggled as a run blocker.

The Packers are keeping offensive lineman Kadeem Telfort and rookie Travis Glover as backups on the offensive line in their starting 53-man roster. Rookie Jacob Monk, a fifth-round pick, could be the top backup at center and guard in 2024.
