Packers release TE Johnny Lumpkin from practice squad

The Green Bay Packers released quarterback Johnny Lumpkin from the practice squad on Tuesday, potentially opening the door for the return of a player who left the practice squad earlier this season.

Lumpkin, a 264-pound blocking point guard, was signed to the practice squad on September 10.

A week before signing Lumpkin, the Packers lost rookie tight end Messiah Swinson, who was signed from the practice squad to the Carolina Panthers’ 53-man roster. On Tuesday, the Panthers waived Swinson, who was not dynamic in any of the team’s first three games of the 2024 season.

Lumpkin’s release could prove to be a move that allows Swinson to return to the practice squad this week.

The Packers signed Swinson as an undrafted free agent out of Arizona State and included him on the first practice squad, indicating they like his potential as a blocker.

The Packers did not announce any other roster changes Tuesday. The team will practice Wednesday before releasing its first injury report of Week 4.
