Packers sections are hoping ancient friend Mike McCarthy will do a favor in Week 18

The Green Bay Packers’ playoff seeding will be determined in part by the performance of Mike McCarthy’s team in the season finale.

Matt LaFleur and the Packers need McCarthy’s Dallas Cowboys to defeat the Washington Commanders on Sunday to assist Green Bay earn the No. 6 seed in the NFC playoffs.

“I hope Mike (McCarthy) will do us a favor,” LaFleur said Wednesday.

McCarthy coached the Packers from 2006-2018 and was the winning coach of Super Bowl XLV. Now he may be approaching his final game as Cowboys coach and will have a chance to assist his former team in a large way.

The Packers, currently ranked No. 7, expect to play with all fit players against the Chicago Bears on Sunday, even though they have a playoff berth secured.

There is a potential reward: If both the Packers and Cowboys win, the Packers will leapfrog the Commanders into sixth place, avoiding a trip to Philadelphia to play the Eagles in the NFC Wild Card round.

Both teams start play on Sunday at noon, so you might be able to see the scoreboards in Green Bay.

Will the Cowboys be able to tie the game? Two weeks ago, McCarthy’s team upset the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at AT&T Stadium. The Cowboys are 4-2 in their last six games, including a win over the Commanders in Washington. The absence of receiver CeeDee Lamb, who is sidelined with a shoulder injury, will hurt things.

If the Packers win and the Cowboys lose, the Packers will be the No. 7 seed. The Commanders keep the tiebreaker in the conference scoresheet.
