Packers sections gain $10.57 million thanks to De’Vondre Campbell’s publishing office

Perhaps forgotten in the chaos of the NFL offseason, the Packers released linebacker De’Vondre Campbell in March with a post-June 1 designation. Now, on June 2, the Packers officially have $10.57 million in cap space for the 2024 season.

Entering the 2024 offseason, Campbell had three years left on his contract with the Packers and had earned $14.23 million. If the Packers released Campbell without a nomination after June 1, they would have to absorb his entire dead cap of more than $11 million against the 2024 salary cap.

However, by releasing Campbell with this designation, the Packers are able to spread their success over the next two seasons. So on the books for 2024, Campbell leaves behind a dead cap hit of just $3.65 million, which frees up nearly $10.6 million in cap space for the Packers.

The benefit of using this designation is obvious: the significant amount of additional cap relief the Packers receive. The downside, however, is that in 2025, even though it will be Campbell’s second season playing elsewhere, he will still count toward the Packers’ salary cap hit at $7.97 million.

According to reports, the move is now official and gives the Packers $30.38 million in available cap space Above the Cap. Some of the additional expenses they will incur in the future include assembling the practice squad and the 52nd and 53rd players on the final roster, but in the grand scheme of the NFL salary cap, these hits are relatively minor.

It’s likely that a decent portion of the newly freed up $10.57 million in cap space will go toward covering the additional cap space that will come with Jordan Love’s extension.

According to Ken Ingalls, at the current cap of $12.75 million, injecting a sizable amount of up-to-date money into Love’s contract could augment his 2024 cap hit by approximately $3 million to $8 million, depending on the size of the extension and how it is extended. is organized.

Right now, the Packers have the seventh-most appearances in football. The squad is pretty well set up and apart from some backroom moves, we won’t see many changes in the future – or at least any significant ones.

Love’s extension is likely the last big-cap move of the offseason, which will nonetheless put the Packers in a good position from a cap standpoint. Any unused cap space at the end of the 2024 season can be carried over to the 2025 off-season.
