The Green Bay Packers have signed two players and released two players from the practice squad ahead of the second week of the 2024 season.
The team announced the signing of quarterback Johnny Lumpkin and quarterback TJ Luther to the practice squad, and the release of quarterback La’Mical Perine and quarterback Jalen Wayne from the practice squad.
Lumpkin (6-5, 264) went undrafted Louisiana in 2023. He spent time with the New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos. In 2022, Lumpkin caught 16 passes for 143 yards and four scores. The Packers needed additional depth at tight end after losing Messiah Swinson to the practice squad last week.
Luther (5-11, 189) went undrafted Gardner-Webb in 2023. He spent time with the New York Jets, Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers. During his final college season in 2022, Luther caught 63 passes for 1,166 yards and eight touchdowns. He was one of several receivers who practiced for the Packers on Monday.
Perine was expected to provide veteran insurance at running back in Week 1, but the Packers appreciated Emanuel Wilson’s outstanding performance and selected Ellis Merriweather, who was expected to be promoted from the practice squad in Brazil.
In week two, the Packers will face the Indianapolis Colts.
