The Green Bay Packers waived rookie kicker James Turner before Tuesday’s practice, limiting the kicking competition to Anders Carlson versus Greg Joseph ahead of the Packers’ second week of training camp.
Turner, an undrafted free agent out of Michigan, has fallen behind in the kicking game, at least in terms of on-field performance. He was 13 of 19 from the field live during training camp, while Carlson, a current starter, and Joseph, a veteran prospect, were each 16 of 18 through their first six practices.
The Packers acquired Turner after he left the Detroit Lions on June 24.
Coach Matt LaFleur rotated the kickers during training camp. Turner got one day, while Carlson and Joseph typically got the next. With only two kickers on the roster, LaFleur and Rich Bisaccia may have an easier time giving Carlson and Joseph the opportunities they need on the field. At least they can alternate days.
Bisaccia said Monday that the kicking competition is still in its early stages, but it is clear that Turner is lagging behind.
Turner was named an All-Big Ten selection for Michigan in 2023. He made 18 of 21 kicks and 65 of 66 extra points for the national champions. Turner transferred to Michigan after four seasons at Louisville.
The Packers made six changes to their roster Tuesday. In addition to Turner, the Packers also released cornerback Zyon Gilbert and fullback Henry Pearson. The team signed cornerbacks Don Callis and L.J. Smith and long snapper Peter Bowden.
