Packers waive QB Jacob Eason, lineup returns to 3 QBs

The Green Bay Packers released quarterback Jacob Eason on Monday, reducing the team’s roster to three quarterbacks.

Eason signed with the Packers on July 23 as the team negotiated a novel contract with quarterback Jordan Love. Eason participated in nine practices, including Saturday’s Family Night practice at Lambeau Field. Love has been back to full practice since Saturday, July 27.

Coach Matt LaFleur has long believed it’s complex to get four quarterbacks the reps they need during training camp. By releasing Eason, the Packers have three back: Love, Sean Clifford, a fifth-round pick in 2023, and Michael Pratt, a seventh-round pick in 2024.

The Packers now have an open spot on their 90-man roster. It’s possible the team is in the process of adding another player, potentially via waiver claim, and needed a spot on the roster.

In fairness, Eason’s chances of staying on the roster were slim in Green Bay. He arrived as a backup while Love sat out practices and had little chance of passing on Clifford or Pratt, the final two picks in the draft.

Eason was drafted in the fourth round by the Indianapolis Colts in 2020. He has spent time with six different teams at the NFL level, and the Packers had him as a test player during their rookie camp.
