Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jayden Reed was held out of practice Wednesday with a up-to-date calf injury, according to the team. Ryan Wood from PackersNews.com. Rob Demovsky of ESPN suggested that the injury was probably not sedate.
Reed, the team’s leading quarterback in his rookie season, missed the start of training camp with a minor toe injury he suffered at a youth football camp.
While the exact severity of the up-to-date calf injury is unknown, the timing of his absence makes it unlikely that Reed will play in Saturday’s preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns.
Reed, a slot weapon, isn’t exactly competing for touchdowns or opportunities. But his injury could open the door for more reps for players like Bo Melton, Grant DuBose and Malik Heath with Jordan Love and the first-team offense.
Coach Matt LaFleur spoke before Wednesday’s practice, and the team will not hold another open practice before the preseason opens, so an update on Reed’s condition may not be available until Saturday.
Reed joins first-round pick Jordan Morgan, who is sidelined with a up-to-date shoulder injury. The Packers expect Morgan to miss a week or two, meaning he will not play against the Browns.
The injury news wasn’t all bad. The Packers returned defensive rusher Kingsley Enagbare, who missed several practices with a hamstring injury.
Elsewhere on the injury front, the Packers waived injured cornerback Don Callis and injured receiver Rory Starkey. Rookie linebacker Edgerrin Cooper and offensive lineman Donovan Jennings remain out with injuries.
