In 2023, Wisconsin set a tragic record when 28 people died while enjoying the state’s lakes and rivers while fishing, hunting, paddling, waterskiing, jet skiing or motorboating.
Most of these people drowned. Only one died in the collision. The record death toll marks the 12th year since 2005 that Wisconsin has had at least 20 boating-related deaths. The previous annual record was 25 deaths in 2017 and 2021.
