Every April it was the same. “You should go smelt hunting with us,” the guys said. “It’s a good time.”
“I’ll think about it,” I said for the first few years when I got a teaching job at Prentice. I was always busy and didn’t have much time. Finally, in 2002, I joined the steel crew, as we called it, and headed for the highway. 13 to Frog Bay near Bayfield to take part in an annual tradition called the “smelting.”
After the first year I was hooked or, I guess, hooked.
