The Wisconsin Badgers are preparing for Saturday’s matchup with the No. 13 USC Trojans. Wisconsin will be on the road against USC, but the Badgers will be on the field Braedyn Locke quarterback position for the rest of the 2024 season.
Tyler Van Dyke he tore his ACL in Week 3 against the No. 4 Alabama Crimson Tide in a 42-10 home loss. The Badgers are 2-1 on the season and without Van Dyke, they will need Locke to replace them.
Wisconsin Badgers leave door open for Tyler Van Dyke to return in 2025
On Monday, Tyler Van Dyke underwent surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). It’s too early to know whether the former Miami Hurricanes quarterback will seek a medical redshirt and return for the 2025 season. He spoke with head coach Luke Fickell reporters on Monday about leaving the door open for him. Fickell said:
“We didn’t sit and talk to him [Van Dyke] Already. Obviously a lot of things happened really quickly… I think the guys need to deal with… And then we’ll sit down and definitely talk to Tyler… But I know this, we love Tyler and we love what he’s done, and hopefully if the opportunity arises, in whichever time he wants to come back, we will have it. “We have prepared a plan and this is how we will do it, including his rehabilitation and making sure that we are thinking about him because he has had surgery [on his torn ACL] today, but it will also be included in our plans.”
Before his injury, Van Dyke completed 63.2% of his passes for 422 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions. He also rushed for 26 yards on 15 carries and one touchdown, and averaged 1.7 yards per carry.
Braedyn Locke has a chance to shine
If Locke plays well in Van Dyke’s place, the Wisconsin Badgers may have a tough time landing Tyler Van Dyke in 2025. Even if Braedyn Locke doesn’t play well, head coach Luke Fickell may look into the transfer portal for a quarterback for the 2025 season.
Locke is a sophomore. So far this season, he has completed 50.0% of his passes for 125 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions. Braedyn Locke has the potential to develop as a quarterback. However, it will be fascinating to see whether Van Dyke returns to the Badgers next season or not.
