There are more trails, roads, and natural beauty to discover in Wisconsin than you might think.
The proof is in the numbers: 44 state trails spanning more than 2,700 miles. More than 100 rail trails spanning nearly 3,000 km, including the nation’s first rebuilt rail trail that passes through historic tunnels and five communities. Designated Bronze by the International Mountain Biking Association, CAMBA trails include over 200 miles of marked gravel trails, many of which are on low-traffic forest roads in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest.
Wisconsin is a biking paradise
Thanks to Wisconsin’s early and hearty dairy industry, the paved roads through the state’s rolling hillsides are perfect—and handsome—for biking. Add to that over 20 bike-friendly communities, including Madison, which is one of only 5 platinum designations in the country, and you have some of the best memories you can capture on two wheels.
Head to Sparta, “the biking capital of America,” to access the Elroy-Sparta State Trail and the La Crosse River State Trail. The Heart of Vilas County Bike Trail is a fully paved national recreational trail spanning over 52 miles, winding through Wisconsin’s Northwoods and connecting to countless other trails, including the popular, purpose-built WinMan Trails.
Adventure lovers can choose the 269-kilometer American bicycle route No. 30/230. It will take you across the state, from the shores of Lake Michigan in Milwaukee to the banks of the Mississippi River, north of LaCrosse using many existing trails and designated bicycle routes.
