Sectionals Packers rookies enjoy steal-filled weekend at training camp

Defensive backs Javon Bullard, Evan Williams and Kalen King — all drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the 2024 draft — had a weekend full of interceptions during training camp.

Bullard, a second-round draft pick, scored a touchdown Saturday that would have given him quarterback Jacob Eason’s sixth touchdown.

Williams celebrated his 23rd birthday Sunday by intercepting Sean Clifford to end a two-minute second-team drive. Williams has three interceptions in six practices.

King also joined the mix Sunday. On the field as part of his first-team reps, King — the seventh overall player from Penn State — threw a low pass to Christian Watson in Cover 2 and was able to return Jordan Love’s interception for a touchdown.

“Obviously, we’re all rivals, so we all want to play and be quarterbacks,” Bullard said Saturday.

Of course, interceptions in training camp are a double-edged sword. While the defense is generating them, the quarterback is losing the ball.

However, the Packers need more playmakers on defense after intercepting just seven passes in the 2023 season.

Can Bullard, Williams and King assist the Packers start receiving? It’s been a phenomenal start to camp for defensive end Jeff Hafley in the receiving department.

“They say choosing the day makes the bad feelings go away,” Williams said via Wes Hodkiewicz from Packers.com“It’s been a good run. I think our entire defense, we probably have over double-digit steals, probably about 15, in the first week of camp. And that’s definitely something to be proud of.”

More assist could be on the way. Oregon State rookie safety Kitan Oladapo is finally set to return from offseason toe surgery. Oladapo intercepted two passes during his final college season.
