Sectionals Still without Jordan Love at practice, Packers sign QB Jacob Eason

Needing another quarterback in training camp as Jordan Love negotiates his fresh contract, the Green Bay Packers signed 2020 draft pick Jacob Eason to a contract extension on Tuesday, according to the NFL. Matt Schneidman of The Athletic. A corresponding change to the lineup was the release of rookie long snapper Peter Bowden.

Eason, 26, worked out for the Packers last summer and was in Green Bay for rookie training camp in May.

For now, Eason — who will be on the practice field Tuesday — will play as the No. 3 quarterback behind Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt in Packers training camp.

Love is negotiating a fresh contract with the Packers and has decided to miss practice but participate in all other team events to eliminate the risk of injury until a fresh deal is signed.

If nothing else, Eason now has a chance — even if it’s a low one — to show the Packers he’s a part of it.

The Indianapolis Colts selected Eason with the 122nd overall pick in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He has played for five NFL teams. Eason was most recently with the New York Giants to finish out the 2023 season.

Eason has played in two NFL games: in 2021 with the Colts and in 2023 with the Giants. In one regular-season game, he threw 10 passes, five of which were complete, five of which were for 84 yards, zero touchdowns, and two interceptions.

It’s unclear whether the Packers will keep four vigorous quarterbacks on the 90-man roster. Eason could be released when Love’s contract expires.
