Sections Packers sign QB Sean Clifford from practice squad to 53-man roster

The Green Bay Packers signed quarterback Sean Clifford from the practice squad to the 53-man roster on Saturday, filling an open roster spot and providing depth at the position with two players returning from injuries.

Clifford, the team’s backup quarterback in 2023, can now serve as the emergency third quarterback without taking a game-day roster spot, meaning he will be technically inactive on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles but will be eligible to play if Jordan Love and Malik Willis will be injured.

Both Love and Willis trained fully on Thursday and Friday of this week, but are dealing with injuries in the season finale. Love suffered an injury to his right elbow and Willis to his right thumb. At one point last Sunday, the Packers were considering the possibility of Love returning to the game against the Chicago Bears after Willis suffered a thumb injury in the fourth quarter.

Clifford spent the entire 2024 season on the practice squad. He was promoted from the practice squad twice – in weeks two and three – after Love suffered a knee injury and missed two games. Clifford was the backup behind Willis in wins over the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans.

The Packers had an open roster spot after placing Jaire Alexander on injured reserve last week.

The Packers did not move any players from the practice squad to the NFC Wild Card Round game-day roster, potentially suggesting questionable players like linebacker Quay Walker and backup Evan Williams will play on Sunday against the Eagles.
