Three Types of Bicycle Routes

Wisconsin’s miles of trails and varied terrain make it an ideal place for biking, and Wisconsin consistently ranks among the best biking destinations in America. The state offers three types of bike trails:

  • Bicycle tourism routes – Easier trails, such as former railway corridors that are paved or have a limestone surface. Generally suitable for all skill levels and bikes with narrow tires.
  • Off-road bicycle routes – Routes for intermediate users, often in forests with various surfaces, from native soil to wood chips. Suitable for families with more adventurous cyclists and hybrid or mountain bikes.
  • Mountain bike trails have been built – Specially created, demanding narrow-width trails, built to specific trail standards.

All people aged 16 and elderly riding a bike on some trails require a state pass to the trail. A state pass is not required for walks and wandering. Admission fees to Wisconsin’s status are the same for residents and non -residents. The annual pass is essential for the calendar year, and the daily pass valid as at the day of purchase. To find out which trails require passes and buy a pass, visit the page DNR website.

Share the trail

Before trail enthusiasts plan their fall adventures, the DNR would like to remind everyone to remember trail etiquette and share the trail.

  • Find out what types of trails are allowed at your destination and obey traffic (and other) rules and signs.
  • Ride or walk alone. You can drive two or more vehicles side by side as long as you do not block other traffic, including those who may want to overtake you.
  • All users should remain on the right, except in the aisle. Always pass on the left.
  • During the examination, you must walk single file and announce yourself (verbally or by ringing the bell) before taking the exam. Slow down when maneuvering around other trail users.
  • Downhill traffic gives way to uphill traffic; slower traffic has priority.
  • Always utilize protected speeds and respect all users.
  • Pets must be kept on an 8-foot or shorter leash and kept under control. Keep your pet away from oncoming or passing vehicles. If possible, walk your pet along the outer edge of the trail. Not all trails are dog-friendly, so check the signs before hiking with your four-legged friend.
  • Pack, pack. Pick up your trash.
