Sturgeon swimming up the Milwaukee River in Wisconsin, but no spawning fish have been discovered yet

While fish from the revived lake sturgeon population continue to move up the Milwaukee River in the spring, local fishing crews have yet to see any signs of spawning.
Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) fisheries biologist Aaron Schiller said that on June 12, PIT-tag sensors in the river near Locust Avenue detected 23 sturgeon swimming upstream from Lake Michigan. Last year, 23 fish were also detected. In 2022, 24 sturgeons marked with PIT were hit by sensors. This year, five sturgeon made it through the recent fish passage at the Kletzsch Dam further upstream.
