Fitchburg is a city of about 25,000 located south of Madison. This community, located on the outskirts of our state’s capital, has made enormous efforts in recent years to make its city bicycle-friendly. This is a popular choice for families to live in the Fitchburg area. They worked with the League of American Bicyclists to create a series of secure and convenient locations for cyclists throughout the city, earning them the League’s designation as an American Cyclists’ Silver Level Bicycle Friendly Community. The city of Fitchburg is not only about bike paths, but it has also made great efforts to make its city a travel destination.

Fitchburg is truly a cyclist’s paradise. Once the snow starts to melt (and for many, even sooner), you’ll see plenty of locals on bikes. Fitchburg is arguably the most bike-friendly city in the state.

Fitchburg is home to at least six different trails – there’s so much bike traffic here that there’s even a roundabout with a bike trail. The city is so committed to bike-friendly trails that there are road signs throughout the city pointing to these trails.

Three of the trails that traverse Fitchburg are state trails and require a pass, and the other three are local Fitchburg trails that are free to exploit and do not require a pass. A state trail pass is required for anyone 16 years of age or older biking, rollerblading or cross-country skiing on certain trails. Pass fees for Wisconsin residents are $20 per year or $4 per day. Many Fitchburg residents bike to work using the Capital City Trail, which takes them directly to downtown Madison. The Badger State Trail stretches 40 miles to the Illinois state line.
The Military Ridge State Trail is 41 miles long and follows abandoned railroad corridors in Dane and Iowa counties. The trail begins in Fitchburg and travels through Verona, Mount Horeb, Blue Mounds, Riley, and ends in Dodgeville. It has been extended in Fitchburg with the Military Ridge Path, which connects the trail to the Badger State Trail, Capital City State Trail, Cannonball Path and Southwest Path near Arrowhead Park in Fitchburg.
The Cannonball Path is the last major cycle path through Verona. It also connects to Madison and is a joint venture with the capital. Includes a bridge over the Beltline Highway.
While the trails certainly attract stern biking enthusiasts, Fitchburg’s biking culture isn’t just for the hardcore. The city encourages family cycling and exploring the area, and hosts bicycle safety classes to aid little ones get on their bikes and hit the trail.
So much attention has been paid to making Fitchburg a bike-friendly city. Winning the League of American Bicyclists title is not effortless. The group provides guidance and direction, and to achieve results, a series of steps must be planned and carried out over a long period of time. You’ll find fountains and bathrooms along the various bike paths, as well as places to aid you keep your bike ready. There are tire inflators and equipment along the paths to aid cyclists when they need it.

In addition to the standard bike trails, Fitchburg also has two mountain bike trails for those who prefer a slightly more challenging and challenging ride than the paved trails.
