Other than a scratch the size of a car hood with a nice licking branch hanging over it, there’s no deer sign that gets the average hunter as excited as a tree trunk the size of a thigh. The sight of freshly scraped bark on a large tree tells you one thing: a large one was there recently.
While deer will rub almost every time their antlers are no longer velvety, the frequency of marking increases significantly in the lead-up to the rut. This is an opportunity for eager hunters to spot tracks and position themselves near them to fill their tags. It’s electrifying and full of promise, but it’s not as basic as it sounds.
