The Milwaukee Brewers’ 5-day window to negotiate with Willy Adames is officially open

Another Milwaukee Brewers baseball season has come to an end. The 2024 team has exceeded expectations with a very teenage group of position players, a stadium full of players previously waived by other organizations, a starting rotation that includes 17 different pitchers, and first-year captain Pat Murphy, who will most likely win Manager of the Year honors.

One player they should lose this offseason is Willy Adames. After the World Series ended, he officially became a free agent the day after they ended and a five-day negotiating window with the Brewers opened. Here’s what’s likely to happen in those five days.

MLB players file for free agency the day after the World Series ends. This officially makes them free agents, but for the first five days thereafter they can only negotiate with the team they were most recently a part of. It’s highly unlikely that Willy Adames and the Brewers will agree to a deal in those five days, regardless of what Milwaukee offers him; will want to see what external organizations offer.

Willy Adames has a chance to receive a qualifying offer from the Milwaukee Brewers

Baseball teams can extend qualifying offers to selected free agents. A qualifying offer is a one-year contract set at a specified value (average salary of 125 highest-paid MLB players). This year’s qualifying bid is worth $21.05 million. Milwaukee will extend this to Willy Adames because if he doesn’t accept it and signs elsewhere, the Brewers will be compensated for their draft pick in return. If they don’t extend a qualifying offer, they’ll get nothing in return.

Will Willy Adames return to the Brewers in 2025?

It seems very unlikely that Willy Adames will be in a Brewers uniform next year. The 29-year-old shortstop is the top free agent available at his position this offseason and is coming off a career season. It won’t take the hometown discount because it’s expected to be heavily pursued by other large market teams like Los Angeles and Atlanta that are able to offer much more from a financial standpoint.
