The Milwaukee Brewers have announced that they will be bringing back a player who previously played first base for them. The player spent the entire season at the MLB level last year, but he will sign a minor league contract in 2025 and will have to earn his way back to the 40-man roster.
The Milwaukee Brewers are bringing back a familiar first baseman on a minor league deal
The Brewers announced it Jake Bauers returns to the team on a minor league contract. He spent all of 2024 in Milwaukee’s substantial league league, where he hit .199/.301/.361 with 12 home runs, 43 RBI and 13 stolen bases. Additionally, Bauers was responsible for a decisive home run during the Wild Card Series against the New York Mets.
Jake Bauers is not eligible as an Article XX(B) free agent.
Under the most recent collective bargaining agreement (CBA), Article XX(B) provides free agents with three opt-out options at various points during spring training and the regular season. Jake Bauers has not met the six-year service requirement because he only has four years of MLB experience. This means that if Bauers doesn’t request a waiver and the Brewers don’t grant him a waiver, he could potentially spend all of 2025 on Milwaukee’s farms and not seek other opportunities for the rest of the seasons.
What role could Jake Bauers play with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2025?
Pending injury or other trades, the Brewers enter 2025 with Rhys Hosksins as their starting first baseman and most likely potential Tyler Black to see an expanded role. If Jake Bauers was called up, a substitute role would be likely, but he can also make a good impact off the bench.
