The Milwaukee Brewers are on the brink of elimination after suffering an 8-4 home loss in Game 1 of their National League Wild-Card Round series against the New York Mets on Tuesday.
After Milwaukee’s loss in the series opener, manager Pat Murphy stated that the Brewers will start Frankie Montas in the second game this Wednesday.
Montas has playoff experience, but his postseason resume isn’t particularly impressive. In three postseason appearances for the Oakland Athletics and New York Yankees (including a start), Montas allowed seven earned runs on 10 hits and six strikeouts over 6.2 innings. However, five of those runs he allowed came in one game – the Athletics’ 2020 loss to the Houston Astros.
Milwaukee Brewers starter Frankie Montas is making a crucial start against the New York Mets
As for his recent form, Montas was shaky towards the end of regular matches. He went 1-2 with a 5.55 ERA in five appearances in September. In his last two appearances, he allowed nine earned runs on eight hits (four home runs) in just 6.2 innings.
It’s worth noting that Montas’ last appearance came on September 27 against the Mets at home, where he gave up just two earned runs (including a home run) on two hits and three walks in an 8-4 Milwaukee win.
Overall in the 2024 MLB regular season, Montas went 7-11 with a 4.84 ERA and 1.367 WHIP.
Montas was acquired at the trade deadline this year by the Brewers, who acquired him from the Cincinnati Reds in overdue July of last year in exchange for Jake Junis, Joey Więcer and a cash consideration.
