Just in time for December, New York Travel Guides has released its list of highlights for 2023 “110 of America’s Coziest Winter Towns for a Magical Getaway.” The authors of Travel Guides surveyed 575 tiny American towns and rated them based on their popularity with Internet search engines and photographers during the winter, as well as “cozy” winter weather – average high temperature, total winter snowfall and frequency of snowfall.

The most crucial thing, however, is that cities were assessed based on their “cozy activities and atmosphere.” The presence of Christmas or winter festivals is taken into account, as well as the appearance of each city and the number of performing arts theaters, places to stay, cozy restaurants and cafes.

Three Wisconsin cities made the list, making them perfect for your next winter weekend. Bayfield, located in the north near the Apostle Islands, was voted the 19th coziest winter town in America. Meanwhile, much closer to Milwaukee, Cedarburg finished 29th and Lake Geneva finished 39th.

So what makes these three cities such great winter destinations? Here’s what you need to know.

Drivers drive on the ice road through part of Lake Superior to Madeline Island from Bayfield, Wisconsin, on Wednesday, March 6, 2013. Most traffic between Bayfield and Madeline Island is by ferry or, in the dead of winter, on the ice road. When the ice breaks up or becomes winter thick, people can only get to the other side using wind sleds - a closed, boat-hulled craft with huge fans at the back that push the craft across the shifting ice. A recent study reviewed 150 years of data on shipping closures and openings at the Port of Bayfield, Wisconsin, and found that ice cover durations are now approximately 45 days shorter on average than they used to be. Less ice cover could lead to longer shipping seasons, but it could also lead to higher summer temperatures - a key factor in evaporation. MARK HOFFMAN/MHOFFMAN@JOURNALSENTINEL.COM
