The Wisconsin basketball team was looking for a substantial man who could do it all and spread players evenly around the court during the offseason, and they found just the right guy.
Xavier Amoswere Northern Illinois basketball player, committed to the Wisconsin basketball program after entering the transfer portal. Amos was an unranked recruit coming out of high school but managed to earn a four-star rating in the transfer portal. The forward broke out last season, averaging 13.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, something he can now repeat with the Badgers.
Wisconsin basketball forward Xavier Amos could be a top breakout candidate
During the chaos of the offseason transfer market, the Wisconsin basketball staff had one main goal in mind, and that was finding big-time support. Wisconsin needed support on both ends of the court, and they literally needed “big” support on the team. Ultimately, the Badgers were able to find their man, as they landed a commitment from former Huskies from NIU forward Xavier Amos.
Amos is a vigorous player, standing 6-foot-8 and weighing in at almost 220 pounds. Offensively, Amos is a versatile three-point shooter who is a great catcher and shooter, hitting nearly 61 percent of his shots. Defensively, Amos is an aggressive defender who often flies up the court to make incredible blocks.
The Wisconsin basketball staff has loved everything they’ve seen from Amos, and so far, Amos has expressed passion for Madison. However, the forward will have high expectations for his potential on the court this upcoming season.
What does Amos offer the Wisconsin Badgers basketball team on the court?
On the basketball court, Amos can offer the Wisconsin basketball team a different level of athleticism for his size. The Badgers basketball staff set out to recruit an athletic, statuesque guy with the ability to score on three levels. The man Wisconsin ultimately chose was Amos, who proved last season that he could fill that role.
Last season, Amos shot 40 percent of his field goal attempts and connected on 64 percent of them. While he took most of his shots close to the basket, the forward also has impressive range, making eight 3-pointers from beyond 25 feet.
Another 20% of Amos’ shots last season came from the top left side of the three-point line. The forward made 34% of his shots from that area of the court. While Amos only makes about 16% of his shots from the right side of the three-point line, he’s actually more right, making 37% of his shots from that area of the court.
While Amos excels at attack, he is also a talented defender. He had a 4.3 percent block rate last season, including five games with three or more blocks.
For Amos, Wisconsin basketball offers a novel chance for success
After starting his career as an unranked recruit, Amos is determined to make a name for himself on the field and build on his breakout season last year. Amos is a versatile, multi-faceted player with the ability to create chaos on offense and defense.
Amos is no newbie when it comes to Big Ten Conference play, playing against both Northwest AND Iowa season ago. The forward scored a career-high 26 points against the Wildcats, making four of five 3-pointers. Amos has proven he can play against solid competition, and now he’ll have the opportunity to do so in every game against tougher competition compared to his aged schedule at NIU.
Offensively, Amos will also be on a team that will complement his strengths as a player and allow him to reach his full potential. NIU has often used Amos in pick-and-pop plays, whether it’s a pick-and-pop where the forward hits a three or a pick-and-roll that creates a view of the basket for Amos. At Wisconsin, Amos will be able to make the long shots he makes so well, and he’ll also have the opportunity to support the team down low.
