Two questions about Wisconsin football after open practices end in 2024

The Wisconsin football team has completed part of its 2024 training camp and has some questions.

The Badgers left Platteville early after two productive weeks with a different intensity, and the staff made some significant decisions. Quarterback Tyler Van Dyke was finally named the starting quarterback for the upcoming season, and freshman cornerback Xavier Lucas earned playing time against the first team. Now, the Wisconsin staff has a novel set of questions to answer before the season opens against West Michigan.

Wisconsin Football Staff Impressed and Intrigued by Talent from Top to Bottom

One of the best feelings a staff can have is the feeling that the team almost has too much talent. It’s challenging to watch players grow and succeed every day knowing that some of them won’t play during the season. For the Wisconsin football staff, many of those decisions are starting to be made as starters are being named to most positions.

The Wisconsin football staff has held nearly four weeks of open workouts for fans and media to get a closer look at the team. Now, the staff is taking the team into a private section of practices as they try to finalize the roster and depth chart before the season begins.

Which linebackers will start for the Wisconsin Badgers football team?

If there is one position where the Badgers have a ton of players, it is the team’s core linebacking. Wisconsin currently has a duo Jake Chaney AND Sebastian Cheeks to fill the middle, with Tackett Curtis struggling for playing time. Curtis was someone who impressed at Wisconsin with his willingness to do everything on the field, but he has yet to secure a real role.

Outside, the Wisconsin football team’s staff will likely begin Jaheim Thomas AND Leon Dolnytwo transfer linebackers with the ability to attack or cover if needed. A fellow outside linebacker John Pius seems to have earned the pass rusher role for Wisconsin because of his ability to get into the backfield. The freshman Angel Lafaele has also made quite a bit of noise, which could translate into a chance to play in the upcoming season, as Thomas Heiberger is sidelined for an unknown period of time.

Does winger CJ Williams have a chance of breaking into the first team in the future?

Perhaps one of the most captivating stories to come out of Wisconsin is the story of the receiver C.J. Williamsformer USC transfer. Williams signed as a four-star wide receiver in the 2022 recruiting class from USC, ranked 73rd nationally and 10th overall as a receiver. Williams was a major asset for the Trojans, but struggled to get on the field and eventually transferred to Wisconsin after head coach Luke Fickell was hired.

Williams had four receptions in his freshman season, then had 15 last season with the Badgers for just 148 total yards. The receiver struggled last season with Wisconsin and could struggle again this season because of the Badgers’ depth at the position.

Williams is currently behind the receivers Will Pauling be, Bryson Green, Priest of TrechaAND Tyrell Henry on the Wisconsin football depth chart. The receiver needs to make the most of the remaining time before camp to refine his technical skills ahead of the upcoming season. Williams has all the tools to succeed at Wisconsin, but the question is whether he can make the most of his opportunities.
