Volunteers lend a hand Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources protect lake sturgeon on the St. Croix River

Sometimes you have to call in reinforcements to get the job done.
The Wisconsin DNR recently did just that in its lake sturgeon tagging program. And thanks to a handful of dedicated citizen anglers, a few hundred more of the St. Croix River’s “dinosaurs” have modern bling to their name.
Since August, volunteer anglers have caught just over 400 sturgeon on hook and line, then returned them to St. Croix with tags that should provide valuable data for years to come. This will be a continuation of work that began in 2015, when Wisconsin DNR fisheries staff began netting and tagging below St. Croix Falls each spring.
