Want a large walleye? Try catching a muskie

As I’d done a thousand times this week, I swung the large crankbait in a figure eight across the boat. As the crankbait hesitated in the spin, a fish jumped out from under the boat and hooked the bait into the sides.
I set the hook and muttered, “Fish!” to let my partner know I had caught what I guessed was about a 40-inch muskie, judging by the width of its head. But I was stunned to see the white tip on the fish’s tail, which was waving much further in the water than it should have been.
I am primarily a muskie angler, and all the walleyes I have caught on muskie lures have been accidental catches. But when something happens repeatedly while fishing, you find a pattern, and large walleyes on large lures are a great example.
