West de Pere Girls Basketball appears the first state since 1978, Eye Championship

De Pere (NBC 26) – From sitting at the stands at the girls’ basketball tournament, Wiaa State as children to take the pitch in the last year, the dream of the West de Pere girls basketball team. But they know that work is not yet completed.

“We are not only going to feel good,” said Phantoms Chris Abaray. “We feel that we have a really good team. Our goal was not just to do this – to win the state championship. So you should focus there this week. A large class of seniors also helps. You have those children who have a mentality “we don’t want to let it go.”

Phantoms are led by seven seniors who have been playing together since they were young. Living so close to the Resch center, they participated in many state tournaments as fans.

“I get my Snapchat memories and all these photos from watching games, but now we’re on the pitch,” said Ella Francois Phantoms. “I think it’s crazy. We have all these photos in the stands, but now we will be on the pitch, which is amazing. “

A colleague from the team Madisyn Berggren agreed.

“I can’t even explain how we are excited,” said Berggren. “We wanted to do it since we were in the third grade, and this simply means that our community is behind us and we could do it with those girls with whom I love to have fun.”

West de Pere stands in the face of 2-expanded Wauwatos East, which has only one loss this season. The main trainer Chris Abaray knows that they will be the best at the moment.

“I know Wauwatos to the east,” said Abaray. “There is well content and come to you with a high level of intensity. We have to deal with it. “

Phantoms have already gone down in history, becoming the first team of West de Pere girls basketball, which has reached the state since 1978.

“It’s so amazing,” said Berggren. “I mean that we got to school on Monday, and all teachers and students said:” Hey, congratulations. ” The fact that we haven’t done it for about 50 years is crazy. Everyone is very excited to us. “

Francois said that she woke up every morning, thinking about training and has butterflies, thinking about the Friday game.

“It’s like basketball, basketball,” said Francois. “And honestly – sorry, teachers – but school is the last thing about my head. And I guess the same for most of my teammates. It’s just an amazing opportunity and we know that we have something wonderful ahead of us that we can completely utilize. “

Phantoms is one of 12 teams exercising in the drive in front of the state. On Friday they will play in the Division II semi -final at the Resch Center.
