Today’s Great Lakes are not the pristine waters of 300 years ago. Dams, industry and the introduction of invasive species have forever changed the ecology of these waters and fisheries. Still, whitefish – a native fish prized for their gentle flavor – persisted, although there were occasional troubling fluctuations.
“Whitefish have been the most valuable commercial species in the Great Lakes since humans first arrived in the Great Lakes,” said Cory Goldsworthy, fisheries supervisor for the Minnesota DNR Lake Superior.
