Why Milwaukee Bucks Need to Give John Wall a Chance in Training Camp, According to NBA Analysis

Even though he hasn’t played in the NBA in quite some time, John Wall still has something to offer any team that signs him, and the Milwaukee Bucks should give the former All-Star a chance to see what he can do to facilitate a Giannis Antetokounmpo-led team win a ring next year.

Wall was the first overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft by the Washington Wizards. He made an immediate impact, earning NBA All-Rookie First Team honors in his rookie season. He continued to develop, making his first NBA All-Star team in 2014 and being named to the All-Defensive Second Team in 2015.

Wall had a breakout year in 2016-17, earning his first All-NBA Third Team selection. However, he soon began struggling with persistent injuries, missing significant time over the next few seasons. In 2019, the point guard tore his Achilles tendon and he was sidelined for over two years.

After a lengthy injury layoff, Wall was traded to the Houston Rockets in 2020. He spent two seasons there before signing with the Los Angeles Clippers as a free agent in 2022. However, he was quickly traded back to the Rockets in early 2023, where they reached an agreement for a buyout.

Milwaukee’s training camp is about to begin, and the team could operate a few recent players. According to an NBA analysis by Dalton Sell for the Behind the Buck PassWall should receive an invitation to attend said camp.

“This isn’t like most of the other players on this list. John Wall is not an unproven young player who could be a hidden gem. He’s a five-time All-Star, All-NBA and All-Defensive player who was one of the league’s best playmakers in his prime. Injuries ultimately derailed his career, as seen in 147 games over the past seven seasons, including three seasons in which he didn’t play a single game.

Despite missing all of last season, Wall made it clear he had no intention of giving up on returning to the NBA, saying that ready to accept any role that is offered to himWith that in mind, it might make sense for the Bucks to be willing to take a risk and bet on him to at least see what he has left in the tank at age 33,” Sell wrote.

Throughout his careerWall averaged 18.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 8.9 assists per game. From 2010-2023, he shot 43 percent from the field, 32 percent from three-point range, and 77 percent from the free throw line.

Throughout his professional career, Wall was a dynamic and talented point guard when healthy, making five All-Star teams and earning All-Defensive and All-NBA honors. However, he endured numerous setbacks due to various injuries that prevented him from fully realizing his tremendous potential at the NBA level.
