A few years ago, people were raving about Quentin Grimes when he played for the New York Knicks. Even though he’s out of everyone’s sights, the Milwaukee Bucks could step in this offseason and potentially put him in a better position next season.
Grimes’ NBA journey has been a rollercoaster over the past year. After a breakout second season with the New York Knicks, the teenage shooting guard entered the year with high expectations, playing a key role in the team’s starting lineup.
However, Grimes had difficulty capitalizing on his previous success as his shooting percentage and scoring average dropped significantly. On offense he often looked tentative and tentative, passing up open shots and struggling to make an impact.
Despite his defensive contributions, Grimes ultimately lost his starting spot to former Bucks winger Donte DiVincenzo and was subsequently included in trade deadline agreement which sent him to the Detroit Pistons. In his miniature Pistons career, Grimes continued to post impoverished numbers, shooting under 22% from the field and just 14.3% from three-point range.
The recent economic downturn has raised questions about Grimes’ long-term health and development. Heading into the offseason, the teenage defenseman will need to find a way to regain the form that made him a promising prospect, whether in Detroit or elsewhere in the league.
Why Quentin Grimes of the Detroit Pistons is a low-key trade target for the Milwaukee Bucks
As it stands, the Pistons’ rotation is a mess, and the franchise could sign some of its players, including Grimes. In an article for Behind The Buck Pass, Dalton Sell explained why the former New York Knicks winger could be a good move for Giannis Antetokounmpo’s team.
“The 24-year-old did not earn consistent minutes in the 2023/24 season, which had an impact on his play. Grimes shot just 39.5 percent from the field and his numbers dropped before he was traded to Detroit in February for Bojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks. He played just six games for the Pistons before missing the rest of the season due to injury, but there are serious questions about his future.
Quentin Grimes struggles defensively, but can make a significant contribution offensively. He could be better than Malik Beasley for the Bucks, and his trade value should be at an all-time low. Grimes will be a restricted free agent in 2025, but Milwaukee can’t wait. They should try to buy a talented defender cheaply and hope he returns to play in the Cream City.” Sell wrote.
Above the course of his careerGrimes averaged 8.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists. He also shot 42% from the field, 37% from deep and 77% from the free throw line.
While there is no word yet on whether the Pistons will make Grimes available or not, the Bucks front office could benefit if they make a move for him this offseason. If given the opportunity, the teenage winger could pick up where he left off before the New York Knicks traded him.
