If you could see the most common routes used by grouse hunters in any given section of the national forest, you would probably notice that about 80 percent of them are concentrated on access trails and forest roads. This includes people who simply want a clear shot at a bird without having to fight their way through brush, as well as people who spend most of the grouse season riding ATVs.
With many birds being killed on trails and forest roads, a hunter looking for a limit of grouse will often have to pull their dogs away from the simple stuff. Many people find this tough to stomach early in the season, knowing that the flush-to-shot ratio will be pretty dismal. But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth it.
