The Wisconsin Badgers running back group is typically powerful year after year. This seems to be the DNA of this football program and this season should be no different. Even with Braleon Allen leaving for the NFL, the Badgers will be fine at this position.
In the 2024 season, the expected relaunch of this football team will be Chez Mellusi. A season ago at Wisconsin, he rushed for 307 yards on 51 carries and four touchdowns while averaging 6.0 yards per carry. Mellusi also caught just three passes for 12 yards and zero touchdowns last season in the receiving game.
His average pace per reception was 4.0 yards, and the Badgers will have him as a primary running back rather than a pass-catching runner in the backfield. Tawee Walker is expected to be a backup in the Badgers lineup this season.
He played for the Oklahoma Sooners last season and is in the process of transferring. Walker with the Sooners, they rushed for 513 yards on 102 carries and seven touchdowns, with an average of 5.0 yards per carry. He also caught 10 passes for 81 yards and zero touchdowns. Tawee Walker also averaged 8.1 yards per catch.
The transfer from Oklahoma could revitalize Wisconsin’s play this season. The reasoning that Ben Kenney from badrswire.usatoday.com wrote about a group of runners, saying:
“Walker looks like a great signing to complement Mellusi in the backline. As always, don’t worry about Wisconsin’s defenders. This is a deep and talented group.”
Outside of these two defensemen, the Wisconsin Badgers have good depth
Jackson Acker will be the third defenseman on the Badgers’ roster, and Cade Yacamelli will be the fourth player on the roster. Both played on the field for Wisconsin last year. Acker rushed for 322 yards on 72 carries and two touchdowns, averaging 4.5 yards per carry. He has the most yards for someone returning to the Wisconsin Badgers this season.
Acker also caught 19 passes for 108 yards and one touchdown and averaged 5.7 yards per reception. Depending on how the situation develops, Jason Acker will also play for Wisconsin at some point this season.
Cade Yacamelli also rushed for 169 yards on 36 carries and zero touchdowns, but he averaged 4.7 yards per carry. Yacamelli will also begin his second season with the football program. Considering he’s fourth on the depth chart, it will be tough for him to get playing time unless he suffers injuries or if the Badgers suffer a few setbacks this season. No matter how good or bad Wisconsin is this season, the running back group is always good.
