Wisconsin Badgers: Winger Trech Kekahuna earns his 10th BIG Rookie of the Week honors

The Wisconsin Badgers needed some younger players to step up the team last week against the Purdue Boilermakers. Wide receiver Trech Kekahuna caught six passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns in Wisconsin’s 52-6 win over Purdue.

Kekahuna averaged 22.6 yards per catch. It was the spark the Badgers needed in their worst offense. It was the first time this season that Wisconsin has scored more than 30 points in a game and is 3-2 on the season.

The BIG10 Conference announced the awards for Week 6 of the college football season. The Badgers’ freshman wing has earned the honor of being a player BIG10 Freshman of the week with their performance against the Purdue Boilermakers. Kekahuna scored a 69-yard touchdown, his first career touchdown.

With his performance, he was the first Badgers wide receiver to surpass 100 yards since Will Pauling, who had 143 yards against the LSU Tigers on New Year’s Day. The last time a Badgers wide receiver passed for over 100 yards in a conference game was on October 8, 2022 against the Northwestern Wildcats. Chimere Dike also took on the honor, gaining 183 yards in the game.

Hopefully, given the way Trech Kekahuna played in this match, he will get more opportunities in the future. Kekahuna could be the freshman spark this offense needs. There are already a number of great wide receivers as rookies this season, some of whom include Ryan Williams of the Alabama Crimson Tide, Ryan Wingo of the Texas Longhorns, and Jeremiah Smith of the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Point guard Braedyn Locke was the latest Badgers player to earn Freshman of the Week honors

The last Wisconsin Badgers player to win Freshman of the Week honors was a quarterback Braedyn Locke October 23, 2023 He and Kekahuna developed instant chemistry against the Purdue Boilermakers. This weekend they will want to maintain their good form in the match against Rutgers Scarlet Knights.

Against Purdue, Locke completed 20 of 31 passes for 359 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. He will be the starting quarterback for the rest of the season with Tyler Van Dyke sidelined with an injury.
