The preliminary 2024 black bear harvest of 4,285 animals over the five-week season in Wisconsin represents a significant rebound from the below-average 2023 harvest of 2,922 bears recorded last season.
“Several factors likely led to the increased harvest this season,” Randy Johnson, DNR enormous carnivore specialist, said in a DNR news release. “In 2023, we saw an incredible amount of acorns and other natural food production. This reduced the effectiveness of baits and resulted in historically low harvests.”
