During a recruiting trip a few weeks ago, the head coach of the Wisconsin football team Lukasz Fickell met with a willing recruit for 2026.
Carter Buck, a 2026 Texas forward, was a defensive target for the Wisconsin football team before the recruiting period began. Wisconsin loves the size and style of play Buck offers, as do other teams like Tulsa AND North Texas. During a recent interview with Wisconsin Sports HeroesBuck talked about the major factors that influenced his recruitment and what it was like meeting Coach Fickell.

While the 2026 recruiting period puts a lot of attention on recruits, the earlier period also comes with valuable recruiting experiences. Edge Rusher 2026 Carter Buck he has gained a lot of attention recently due to his size and success on the field, as well as his teammate’s success and commitment to USC Gus Cordova. Buck believes he gets special attention from coaches who often watch Cordova on the field.
Whether Cordova unknowingly helped Buck or not, the edge rusher has a certain skill set that truly sets him apart. First, Buck steps onto the court with a massive 6’1″ frame that increases his reach and attack range. Second, Buck is a high-motor player who consistently works to make things happen, even when the game is away from him.
While many schools have yet to reach out to Buck personally, the recruit has received plenty of attention through his high school coach. A few weeks ago, Buck had the opportunity to meet Coach Fickell for the first time and get to know Madison through virtual reality headsets.
Carter Buck: “I would like to live close to home or have family nearby”
For Buck, perhaps the most important key to his recruiting is where he ultimately lands. When asked about programs he’s interested in, Buck said, “I’m interested in Texas A&M because it’s not too far from there and I’d love to be close to home or have family nearby.”
Buck continued, “I’m also interested in Wisconsin because I have family near Minneapolis who has a lake house in Wisconsin.”
Staying close to family is key for Buck, and luring him to Madison will take a lot of convincing given the distance. However, Buck said he is focused on “…finding a place where I can get playing time the fastest, and also looking for a school with good academics.”
Wisconsin Badgers hope to build close relationship with Buck
The key to acquiring Buck for the Wisconsin football staff will be maintaining a close relationship with the recruit. Perhaps the most important aspect of his recruitment is being close to family, and while Buck has family in Wisconsin, having staff act as family would be an even greater challenge. Buck takes his relationships and connections with his employees seriously, and if he doesn’t find the connection he’s looking for, he’ll likely look elsewhere.
