Wisconsin Football Camp Update: Clear QB Winner Emerges, Wide Receivers Struggle

The Wisconsin State football team returned to camp after a scheduled day off, and in just one day, a lot has changed for the team.

The electrifying and open battle of point guards quickly became narrow to two point guards at the start, and now it seems to have been closed. Point guards Tyler Van Dyke stepped into practice and showed off his arm strength, throwing multiple 50-plus-yard bombs down the field. While the quarterback shined, his receivers had a slightly tougher day trying to hold onto the ball.

The Wisconsin football staff continues to ramp up the pace in practice as they try to field a more well-rounded team this season. The Badgers have a few more practices before their time in Platteville comes to an end and the team returns to Madison to finish preparation. The early look from the team has been positive so far, especially the pace and tenacity they’ve played with during live practices in pads.

After a week of fierce battle and shared experiences between the two quarterbacks, Hurricanes in Miami to move Tyler Van Dyke looks to be the starter moving forward. Van Dyke looked much more impressive than his competitor and teammate Braedyn Locke in recent practices and earned the majority of the first-team reps. While the competition isn’t officially over, Locke will have a challenging time moving forward given Van Dyke’s recent success.

During this recent practice, Van Dyke threw a number of handsome passes down the field and sent them home. Van Dyke had previously shown solid accuracy down the stretch, but finally got a chance to really throw the ball in the air during a live game. The quarterback didn’t disappoint, and his accuracy in throwing the ball deep into the paint seemed more impressive than his arm strength.

Van Dyke hasn’t been a quarterback who could really release the ball, given his offensive line and coordinator. Wisconsin’s quarterbacks had a similar problem last year, not releasing the ball as far as the staff would have liked.

The Wisconsin football coaching staff has not yet named Van Dyke a starter and likely will not do so until after the Platteville game, at which point a decision will be made.

Wisconsin Badgers football players struggle with dropping balls again

While the quarterbacks, particularly Van Dyke, had a great day, the receivers on the other side struggled at times with key drops. Van Dyke made an incredible pass downfield at one point during live drills that was dropped by the receiver. It would have been an impressive catch by the receiver considering the defender in the field, but regardless, the ball was delivered where it needed to be and dropped.

Last season, the Wisconsin football team struggled with its receivers dropping the ball, and the staff worked challenging to try to reduce that problem in the future. Last season, Wisconsin’s receivers dropped the ball 30 times, with the star receiver being Will Pauling be leading the team with seven drops. The drops really hurt Wisconsin and contributed to some of the Badgers’ losing records last season.

It will be intriguing to see how the Wisconsin football staff handles receivers dropping passes in the future, given that the staff has identified this as a problem that needs to be addressed.
